   I think DiRT2 and Shift sales probably suffered on the platform due to the looming F3. Both of these games have great demos which I enjoyed and I look forward to picking them up cheaply in the future.

         It’s just that one of the things that I like about Kotaku is its fairly independent vibe, and my more cynical side does wonder whether the massive amount of coverage that Borderlands is receiving from you guys is part of some kind of advertising deal. I mean, even an article about Uncharted slips in a Borderlands reference; Owen good wrote “Those who follow me on Twitter know I’ve spent a ton of time in Borderlands lately, but I am also playing Uncharted 2”. It could be that Borderlands really is that good, but living in the era that we do, whenever a message reaches a certain saturation point I automatically start to look for the men with the green pulling the strings. With that said, I still heart you Kotaku 😉

            I think it’s probably more reasonable to assume that we’re simply referencing a game we’re currently playing and enjoying. Don’t worry though, I’ll revert to Far Cry 2 references once I’m done with Borderlands. Just waiting for Ubisoft to renew that contract…

         I tend to agree. The forced hype for this game has turned me off it – from the constant references on this site to the astoundingly stupid comments by the developer about other games “reported” by games news sites even though they were obviously utter rubbish just trying to get “Borderlands” another headline… *takes a deep breath*

      Glowing reviews… 83% on Metacritic… extremely good word of mouth…

      No, none of these overrides Kotaku’s ridiculous overplugging of the game, right?

      I don’t mean this in a harsh way, I do mean this in a genuine question kind of way but, do you ever feel that being ‘independent’ or different from the pack is costing you more than its benefiting? This example is just a game, but I have 2 friends that instinctively will refuse to try anything mainstream (hobby, movies, games, non-nerdy activity, ANYTHING). They like being different… they like following the Indie scene. My response is ‘stop trying so hard’ but thats just me 🙁

   Borderlands on the 360 FTW!!!!

   It seems that when a PS3 title charts higher than the same game on the 360, its mostly a non-online type of game. For example, racing games – although available to play online with an opponent, is mostly used single player or offline-multiplayer.

   Borderlands is great game but its best in Co-op and online. Hence why the Xbox regins this week for that title. Its the same with Operation Flashpoint among others.

   Thats my theory and makes sense cause Xbox Live is more superior than the Playstation Network. Uncharted 2 though is great though – only one hiccup i’ve experienced and not a lot of lag when playing with bloody yanks.

      You are probably off the mark there. I would say that Borderlands ranked higher on the 360 than the PS3 because most PS3 owners are still playing and buying Uncharted 2 and don’t need to buy another game.

         Indeed, also given that Borderlands is meant to be played with friends and doesn’t used dedicated servers. There are no inherant benefits of playing the game on Live, I mean so what if you have 10,000 more players on the network, thats just 10,000 more players who will steal your loot.

   Sorta off topic but does anyone know if Uncharted has Australian servers? Matching up for me on uncharted has been a bit hit and miss.

   The marketing tactics that I referenced are quite common in many industries, and Kotaku’s coverage of Borderlands does bear many of the hallmarks of such a strategy. However I was careful to admit that my viewpoint was quite cynical (probably as a direct result of studying marketing and public relations for several years), and that I was open to the possibility that the game really was awesome enough to justify its coverage. I guess at the end of the day my point was that for me personally, the more that I hear a message encouraging me to consume, the more I tend to switch off to that message, or question the motives of the people behind that message.

   As for your question, the sense in which I was using “independent” was as a synonym for “autonomous”, rather than as a synonym for “different from the mainstream”. So no, I don’t really feel like I’m missing out on much. Amy Winehouse sits quite comfortably next to Amiina in my iTunes 🙂

   And finally, David, hold out for the Eurocom contract. Vancouver 2010’s going to need all the help it can get!

    Could everyone that bought Forza3 start lobbying for system-link to be put back in? For those of us without a decent internet connection, this is a real bummer. Forza 2 was a lan-party staple here, we have been waiting for Forza3 with so much anticipation, and now we can’t play it multiplayer. I’m so bummed.

    Forza 3…Pfft! It may be at the top of the list, but its such a huge disappointment. An arcade racer trying to pass itself off as a sim.
    “But it has realtime tyre deformation.” I hear you say.
    “Really? We’ll instead of spending a huge chunk of time modelling tyre deformation for the whopping 3 tyre choices in the game. Where adding this feature, who nobody gives two shits about, and is so useless in a game that is as much of a sim as Grid, or NFS Shift is. Why cant we have crazy things like working guages in all cockpits, not just some, or tracks with complete textures? Why is the drag feature just plain horrible? Why didn’t they make the game fun to play, you did okay making Forza 1 & 2 enjoyable. Why, Turn10, why??”
