World Of Tanks Turns 1.0 Next Year

It’s been a while since World of Tanks got a fresh paint of coat. But come March next year, that’s exactly what the free-to-play shell-a-thon will be getting.

In a release just ahead of Christmas, Wargaming announced that their flagship free-to-play game would be rolling out a huge update to the game’s core engine – predominately developed in Australia – in March.

The update will patch more than 25 maps, with extra detail to the skyboxes, terrain and water textures, reflections and new physically-based renderers. Main themes have been made fresh for each of the game’s updated maps as well, with Wargaming contracting more than 40 musicians to compose and record the new music.

Some of the music and visuals can be viewed in-game ahead of time, through the World of Tanks enCore 2018 feature:

EnCore is basically a replay program that will let players “replay battle videos and check how the overhauled game will perform on their game station”. It’s not known at the time of writing if WoT 1.0 will have a specific benchmark, or whether players will just have to fire up a replay and see how their rig handles the new graphics.

Nonetheless, it’s always nice for an old game to get a fresh coat of paint. Given that Wargaming’s tech is shared across multiple titles, it raises the possibility that World of Warships and World of Warplanes could get graphical updates in the coming year, too.
